Heinzelmänchen
prepare our Washington Heights apartment.
When
we arrived in New York on the Cunard liner Mauretania in October of
1947, we moved into an apartment on
Audubon Avenue
directly across from
George
Washington
High School. The apartment had been acquired (a miracle during
the post-war housing shortage) and completely furnished for us, right
down to milk and eggs in the fridge, through the remarkable energy of my
Aunt Hilde (my Uncle Arthur's wife), with help from other aunts, uncles
and cousins. My parents were overwhelmed by such kindness
from a woman they had never before met.
This
illustration is a precise representation of our apartment. My brother Tom and I shared the
one bedroom, my
parents slept on a fold-out sofa in the living room.
